iOS 5 Changelog and Thoughts [Updated: Beta 2]
Written by Benna on Jun 7, 2011
Updated: BETA 2
We just got installed the iOS 5 Beta 2 and Apple has made some notable changes over the OS with this release. We’re going to list out what we could find after digging through the OS here.
- New Lockscreen Notifications
- WiFi Sync seems to be working fine. It worked in the Beta 1 as well, but it was occasional.
- OTA updates screen promises to deliver next updates over the air.
- New iCloud icon on Settings.app.
- New icon for Storage and Backup.
- The Default wallpaper selection is back.
- You can now set sounds for Reminder alerts.
- iTunes Sync screen shows what’s currently being synced.
- Weather app shows hourly forecasts for everyday when you click on a day.
- Spotlight search now includes Reminders.
- iMessage possible only to fellow BETA 2 users. No support for Beta 1.
- New International Assist in Phone settings. Automatically adds correct prefix to US numbers when dialing from abroad.
- iMessage screen shows waiting for Activation (Is this again related to carriers?..if so, that sucks)
- New lining in Messages.app to specify if its iMessage or SMS.
- When you scroll down in the Messages.app, the keyboard hides.
- The tweet button is rearranged to top in Photo’s app.
- When you click “Tell a Friend” in AppStore, the new email includes an Icon of the app, a description, and rating in the mail that is sent.
- New First Boot Animation. First boot will display a glowing Apple logo. (Thanks @71bib0)
- In Music settings, There is a new option which is “Group By Album Artist”. (Thanks @71bib0)
- On the “Text Tone” page, instead of showing “new”, they are all in one category now, “Tones”. SAme thing for “Ringtone” page. (Thanks @Jose)
- On the “General” tab, “Reset” is now seperated from the other choices, “Date & Time,Keyboard,International,Accessibility”. (Thanks @Jose)
- When in “iCloud” tab, tap on “Account”, On the bottom now there is a category called “Advanced” and it shows “Mail” along with your e-mail.(Thanks @Jose)
- When in “Mail, Contacts, Calendar”, On the bottom it shows “Reminders” and gives you options to Sync. (Thanks @Jose)
- In the “Messages” tab, The “Alerts” “Show Preview” “Repeat Alert” have been removed. (Thanks @Jose)
BETA 1
Apple launched three BIG things yesterday. Lion. iOS5. And, not the least, iCloud. We’re more interested about iCloud and iOS5 more than Lion. Apple mentioned 10 major features out of the 200 features they’ve claimed to have added in this latest version of iOS5. We’re going to try listing out that 200 features in here.
Unhappy Developers
First of all, Apple really pissed off many people out there including developers and RIM. First, lets talk about the developers. The App Store is mostly filled with Reminder apps and those developers are really pissed off since yesterday’s keynote. Apple has put up their own reminders app in the latest version of iOS. This means, all those reminder apps you find on the AppStore at dead, or may be at least, very low sales. Apple has also included location based reminders that reminds you when you cross a “geo-barrier”. There were apps for this purposes, we reviewed Place Clock a while ago which was supposed to give you alarms when you reach a specific geo location. Apple borrowed features from all these apps out there and combined it into a single app.
Secondly, its a hit to Camera app devs. Many developers including taptaptap, makers of Camera+, one of the best camera apps out there. Apple has added a feature to iOS 5 which lets you quickly open the camera from the lock screen even if the phone is locked. This means, less frequent use of third-party apps.
You might figure out these stuff yourselves. Developers Instapaper wouldn’t be happy either with the latest announcements from Apple. Let’s move into nice little features of iOS 5.

35. You can edit your number in Settings.
36. You can set the default account for notes to be synced to in Notes options

116.Ability to Enable/Disable Badges on Apps
Incorrectly Described
128.Download more than one app simultaneously. No waiting for the previous app to be completed (not true. It downloads, then downloads the next app in line, before installing. It doesn’t actually download multiple apps at the same time).

In a way, Apple is pushing those devs to their limit to further push for instance, the ease of use or function of their apps; to be a step ahead in the smartphone race nowadays…

Please tell me they finally allowed for default reminder times when setting calendar appointments. the number of times I’ve gotten burned by this are legion. It also cripples the iPad as a business device. Please tell me they got this right. This one outweights game center integration(groan)

You could already do 128! What you do is have one app updating while others say “waiting…,” then you pause the app updating. You then immediately put the iDevice on sleep. Next, when you wake up your iDevice, all of them will be paused. You can tape more than one app to have more than one downloading.

I think this more refers to being able to download an app, then without it switching out of the app and onto the springboard, download another app, like they do in windows phone 7. No more need to switch back to the app store to download another app. Not simultanesouly downloading apps.

2 Questions about FaceTime maybe someone can answer:
1. When on a FaceTime call on iPhone and you press the top on/off button does it end the call or lock the screen (like it does in cell speakerphone call)?
2. It sounds like you can now associate an Apple ID along with your phone number for Facetime. If someone FaceTimes your phone number does it ring in other places where you are using that Apple ID? (eg. Mac or iPad?)

I didn’t get number 137… How do you set up your Time Capsule from your iPhone? It would be great if you could backup to your Time Capsule instead of iCloud.

It maybe easier for you to understand if you remove “Time Capsule” from your thoughts, and only think about Airport Express’ or Extreme’s. Someone who buys an iDevice and doesn’t have a computer, can now create a wireless network with an Airport Device with no computer required.

Does iOS 5 allow search within an address book entry? For example does it allow a search on a street address — for example, so you can locate a restaurant or other contact whose name you can’t remember. This is a huge missing capability in iOS4.

Does iOS allow you to close all background apps with one click? Or do we still have to tap a million times..?
Like or Dislike:

Background apps in iOS aren’t actually in the background. The list of “background” apps is actually just a list of recently used apps and “closing” them has no effect on system resources.

It does if the app uses multitasking APIs to do work in the background; try playing some music, go to the home screen and kill off iTunes (or Music, as it’s now called) and see what happens.

Say what you will “background” or frozen apps still use resources specifically ram and gps… If i had a nickel for how many times i had to close all my apps in order to get infinity blade to run on my ipad. Other good ways to maximize performance is close all your safari pages, and turn on airport mode, so its not scanning in the background for networks and gps location data.

You can no longer move a mail message into a folder on another email account (the other account is now not selectable from the “accounts”) at least for exchange accounts which is what I use. This is a great change for those of us that are security conscious and need to ensure that corporate email messages can’t trivially be moved to personal accounts bypassing company archiving and data-loss-prevention.
Like or Dislike:

So… the method now is to simply take a screenshot of the email and have it be saved to your camera roll instead? Heh. Security at it’s finest!
Like or Dislike:

You misunderstand. Taking a screenshot bypasses neither company archiving nor data-loss-prevention. The email chain is preserved within the company system and can’t trivially or accidentally be shifted to becoming an external (non-tracked, easy to lose) email conversation.
There is NO security to stop someone in ANY email system on the planet from copying the contents of an email. They could simply take a photo with another camera, or write it down on a candy wrapper! That’s not what Jjsp is talking about.
Like or Dislike:

This makes no sense.
A user could simply copy and paste the message content elsewhere. Even if that were blocked, someone can take a photo of the display, or just retype it. If you don’t want content leaving your network, you need to shut down all external access and require users to enter the physical campus to read email on their desktops. Disable all removable media, ban cameras, and be sure to search all employees going in or out. The building and computing equipment should be EM-shielded to prevent a Tempest attack. Oh, and only hire employees with lousy memories who can’t remember anything long enough to write it down after they leave.
As for archiving policies, those should be implemented on the server side anyway; a user moving a message (or simply deleting it) should not have any impact on retention by the corporate mail system.

This sounds great–wish we could get it now! The only jailbreak features I like that doesn’t sound covered is the ability to have 5 cols of icons and a scrolling dock that allows more than 4 icons. There is so much wasted whitespace (especially on the iPad)–really wish they would allow us to cram more icons on each page of the springboard!

Btw it took me a while to realize it after getting my ipad, but you know u can get 6 icons in the ipad dock right? iphone only has four and infinidock is an awesome fix for that but the ipad does get six at least. *wish it had more, really i wish it was like the dock in osx.

I’d have to add Backgrounder. I use Navigon for GPS, and with the default iOS handling of background apps, I can’t leave the app in the background for more than a few minutes without iOS silently killing it. I’d be nice if iOS would ask me before killing something that’s doing actual work in the background.
MiWi is another app I’d want to keep, but that’s not an iOS issue. If AT&T actually gave me something useful for the extra $20, I’d consider the built-in tether, but 2GB is 2GB, and has the same network impact no matter how I use it. It’s like having to pay a higher toll on the highway because the car is red instead of blue.

I dunno if anyone else has noticed this, I haven’t seen anyone else mention it anywhere, or if its an ios5 feature or if it was there already, im almost 100% sure it wasn’t but anyway. The thing is contacts/phonebook is now unified. what I mean by this is, say you have contacts from icloud and mobileme. And say you have a contact on each for johnny appleseed, but maybe icloud has his phone number and mobileme has his email. Ios has always let you view all your contacts in one list. But before you would have two entries for johnny appleseed, Now it gives you one contact with the information merged together from both sources. its a pretty nice little feature. Anyone else notice that?

In voiceover you can now add your own labels to buttons, the rotor now has the ability to move by headings in apps as well as toggling of hints. If you move the rotor in a html area (IE safari, after a pause Voiceover will indicate how many elements there are of the type you selected, IE, 12 links. Also:
There are a few changes as far as the voices that iOS uses (voice control, speak auto-text and selection as well as voiceover)
1. Many voices had been updated with higher quality versions, such as US, Australian, Polish, Portuguese, and many others.
2. Other voices have just been changed (UK voice is now male, german is now female, ditto for swedish, french is now male… There are more changes like that)
3. More languages have been added (Iresh and south-african english, arabic, and another one which I am unsure of… It’s one of those that seems to have its own writing style.) This means that if someone uses the iOS device with the region set somewhere near ireland, south africa, etc, it will use one of the new voices.

different text tones for different contacts already available in ios4, but in ios5 settings, it shows option for buying more tones, which was not in ios4. When you click it, it takes you to buying ring-tones, so possibly just not running on iTunes yet? When selecting a wifi network in settings you only now get a tick when all dhcp ips have been processed, i noticed this as i’ve got a buggy router at the mo that tends to be slow at delivering a new dhcp lease, once the IP, subnet mask, and router addresses have been established you get a tick. Where as before on ios4 i got a tick even though i hadn’t been given an IP

A workaround I use for this is to create a contact in your address book and under the email field type multiple addresses separated by commas. When you type the contact name into the address field of the mail app the whole list of email addresses get sent to.

Swiping in day, week, month, year (much like a real paper calendar)
Double tap to add an event in day view
Tap and drag to move an event (different day or different time)
Tap and hold in “all-day events” to create a new all-day event
Year view
Schedule based on year view (red = busy, orange = slightly busy 2+ events, yellow = not busy 1 event, white = nothing)

In Calendar (iPhone)
- in week view you can scroll between weeks by swiping
- in week/day view you can subtly edit the start/finish times of an event (or shift it to another day entirely) but touching and holding an event. It will ‘float’ and there will be handles.
- calendar has a ‘current time’ indicator line

What does GIF in question #153 mean?
Like or Dislike:

A GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is just another image format. But, what makes them different than most is that you can “stack” a sequence of images – much like the frames of a movie – then consolidate them into a single GIF file. When viewed, the GIF “animates” by running through the images you stacked into the file earlier, creating what looks like a mini video clip. Some are only a few frames long, while others can have many frames. There are several programs, some free of charge, that allow you to create them, including the mighty Photoshop. I call it a poor man’s Flash.

I have a couple of questions:
First, most of these new features are for the iPhone. Is there a change log that lists new features just for the iPad without having to hash them out from this master list?
And second, when, if ever, is Apple going to implement Adobe Flash into iOS? Why wasn’t Flash included from the very beginning? It’s sad to see that with all these new features being added that Flash isn’t one of them. The internet is underwhelming without Flash and not only that, you can’t even view some sites at all without it. What gives?
Like or Dislike:

Apple’s most likely never going to add Flash. They’ve made too firm a stance about it now, even if it were to be re-written to be less resource intensive.
Here is Apple’s (Steve Jobs’) personally published reasons as to why Flash wasn’t, and isn’t included in iOS: http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/
The internet does suck without Flash, but testing has been done on the Android phones that do support it, and it sucks the hell out of their resources. Makes them slower and drains their batteries quicker. HTML5 accomplishes all the same things, without the resource hogging.
The real issue here is that most of the internet’s not brand-new websites are still built using Flash. Eventually everything will switch over to HTML5, as Apple is trying to make it, but that’s no small thing, and will take a while. Until then, iOS devices will be lacking in a few areas, but will continue to claim longer battery lives and faster running speed.
If Flash is a crucial tool to you, try one of the many Android devices that support it instead.
Oh, and agreed, an iPad specific list would be really nice (since that’s the only place I’ll be getting iOS5; my old iPhone 3G don’t get no Apple love no more
)

Thank God for no Flash. It’s not even a web technology. The web is HTML + CSS + JavaScript. Period. Flash is like Java in that it’s an add-on. *By definition*, add-ons are not part of the system. I had Flash on my device for a Android while, but took it off. Never used it. None of the sites that I go to use it. None.
Thank you Steve, for allowing us to have the web back from the lameness of Flash. It was about time someone took a stand.

It’s because Steve Jobs doesn’t like Flash, because it drains the battery too much, especially in comparison to using HTML 5 as a substitute.

It’s not enough to simply have Adobe’s Flash platform. The stuff that needs Flash (or even Java, for that matter) generally were initially designed for mouse/keyboard interaction and not touch interaction. Including Flash would be simply having something to have something, it wouldn’t be the experience of using Flash stuff with a mouse/keyboard, assuming a Flash-based item were usable at all (i.e. could even detect touch, have large enough areas for touch, etc.).
It’s kind of like asking why a car manufacturer didn’t include a bag of hay for people who might want to carry along their old horse in their new car. Just leave the has-been horse where it has been, and let it do what it does best: horse things in horse places. Same for Flash.

Oh c’mon. The App Store is not “mostly filled” with reminders apps. I doubt it’s even one whole percent of the apps out there. As for how the developers feel about this, unless you actually know how they feel, don’t say anything. Have you even spoken to any of the developers you mentioned?
I myself would imagine they’re not ecstatic, but they knew this was a possibility, as you basically sign a document saying so before you become a developer. There are tons of other apps you can write, and so you move on. I would imagine they’re more happy about all the great features in the new version of iOS. However since I haven’t spoken to any of them, I’m not gonna make any claims as to how they actually feel.
Oh, and nice list btw!

I agree. These are some of my thoughts, and normally developers would feel. There are devs who just depend on their best selling reminder apps like Due and NotifyMe and 2Do. They would naturally feel awkward when Apple just screw them. Apple had already copied some of the Stuff like the WiFi Sync Icon from an app that was rejected later this year. They just took out the feature of ReadItLater and Instapaper and made it reading list. They took the lockscreen notification which was dribbled by a designer an year go. Once again, personal thoughts on what a developer would feel.
No offense.

Here’s what the developer of Instapaper has to say:
http://www.marco.org/2011/06/06/safari-reader-and-instapaper
You’re not stating “what a developer would feel”, but instead you’re just being pessimistic. Let people speak for themselves. Anybody can make stuff up about others (about children, women, minorities, rich, poor, etc.), it’s what they call storytelling, fiction, and sensationalizing like a tabloid. Strawman is another word.

This is rumored to be coming before the release version of iOS 5, through integration of Nuance technology. This is the same recognition technology used in Nuance’s Dragon Naturally Speaking apps that you can buy in the App Store (one for dictation and one for search). It will be nice to gain access to this from any text field rather than having to invoke a separate app.

Don’t think this one’s in your list – on the Remote.app there’s now an option to activate the iTunes visualiser on the computer you’re controlling by tapping on the album art in ‘now playing’. As well as the Repeat, Genius and Shuffle icons in the drop-down, there’s now also a visualiser icon.
I know that technically Remote.app isn’t part of iOS5 as it’s downloaded from the App Store, but think that it was updated as part of the iOS update; I’m not aware of updating it through the App Store since I installed iOS5 and the Post Date in the store is 15 March 2011. Maybe it was always in the current version but only enabled under iOS5?

These may not be features, but they are minor tweaks I found by taking a picture of each possible tab i could get into from the beta 1 then compared the pictures with my iPhone running the beta 2.
1. On the “Text Tone” page, instead of showing “new”, they are all in one category now, “Tones”. SAme thing for “Ringtone” page.
2. On the “General” tab, “Reset” is now seperated from the other choices, “Date & Time,Keyboard,International,Accessibility”
3. When in “iCloud” tab, tap on “Account”, On the bottom now there is a category called “Advanced” and it shows “Mail” along with your e-mail.
4.When in “Mail, Contacts, Calendar”, On the bottom it shows “Reminders” and gives you options to Sync.
5. In the “Messages” tab, The “Alerts” “Show Preview” “Repeat Alert” have been removed.

In iOS 5 Beta 2, number 24 is not completely true, the repeat alert has not been removed, it has moved to the “Notifications” tab in settings, once you enter it and Select Messages it gives you the chance to select how many times you want the alert to be repeated. This is new to iOS Beta 2

I actively check this list for new changes and I’m thankful for you guys hosting this. But I have 1 complaint. the “unhappy devs” tidbit you have. This is the only website that complains at all about apples slew as updates, which have been seen overwhelmingly positive feedback. Apple filled in the camera/reminders gap with their own quality version. Does this suck for the .1% of developers exploiting this gap? Yeah. But ultimately they are irrelevant to the general community of devs, and shouldn’t have a spot on these lists of features and changes.

Oh sorry 1 more thing for my point. In the “unhappy devs” part its said “Apple borrowed features from all these apps out there and combined it into a single app”. First off, everything in the world is borrowed from other things. iOS 5 took a lot of what other people did and twisted it slightly or a lot. Personally I want apple looking at what other people do and putting their own take on it, thats a win for anyone with an iDevice. Secondly, why the hell wouldn’t you want Apple combining already made useful apps and putting it into a single app that comes with the phone? Thats just another win for anyone with an iDevice.
Again I love this website but this little section is just so wrong and ugly.

Can anybody confirm if it is yet possible to change the assigned group of a contact? I find it very annoying that this can only be done from a pc, not directly on the phone itself

- Enhanced location services controls: Aside from a prominent new screen in the iOS 5 setup process outlining how location services work, the new beta also includes finer granularity of controls, allowing users to specify whether such functions as cell network searching, diagnostics, iAds, time zone setting, and traffic information may make use of the device’s location information. This is of course in addition to the per-app location controls that are already available.
- Speed enhancements: User reports indicate that performance is significantly improved under the new beta, with a considerable reduction in lag.
- Voice roaming: In addition to the existing ability to turn off data roaming in order to avoid hefty data charges, the new beta adds a “voice roaming” toggle that will allow users to prevent their phone from connecting while on roaming networks not included in their carrier’s service package and thus subject to extra fees.
- Prompt for moved video content: With iOS 5, Apple has rebranded the “iPod” app on the iPhone and iPad as “Music”, in line with what is found on the iPod touch. The new beta now issues an initial prompt informing users that video content such as movies, TV shows, and music videos have been moved to the “Videos” app.
- Safari preferences: The ability to clear cookies and data has been restored in the new beta, and a new “Advanced” page has been added with additional tools for removing data and debugging.
- Other assorted tweaks: A new icon for the “Reminders” app that is being added in iOS 5, an iTunes Store button in the “Music” app, the Wi-Fi Sync setting renamed to “iTunes Wi-Fi Sync”, and mailbox creation from within Mail.

Apple has activated the new “Assistive Touch” features for the iPad. The Assistive Touch settings were in place in iOS’s accessibility settings in previous betas, but is only now active. The new features are meant to provide additional interactivity for those who might have trouble using the traditional gestures and buttons on the iPad.
The new settings allow users to activate a menu overlay on the iPad with by pressing on a designated corner. The menu allows one-tap access to all of the iPad’s functions including rotation, shaking, volume changes and even gestures. Known gestures such as pinch and swipe can be recalled by a tap, and custom gestures can even be recorded and played back on command.
